Incorporating Wordly in Video Systems
How to customize a subtitling display for onscreen viewing
You can display Wordly content on an exterior monitor for your attendee's viewing. Wordly can be displayed full-screen or can be overlaid on top of video to provide open subtitles for viewing.
You set this up in the Display feature of Wordly.
To customize your subtitling display:
- Set up the transcription/translation frame that displays the subtitles. This feature makes it simple to add video subtitles directly into your production workflow.
- Bring the Wordly captioning frame into the production video switcher or software that you're using.
Prerequisites
- A production video switcher or software, such as Open Broadcaster Software (OBS).
To customize a subtitle display
- Go to Wordly Display and enter the Session ID that you want to use.
- Set the font size, color, and background color of the overlay in New Frame Settings and click Add Frame. For more information, see Display Wordly Captions on Screen.
- Click Screen Layout (
). Adjust the margins to have the captioning frame display how you want. If you're setting up for a full screen display, enter 0 for the margins and a number for the safe area that adds a border for the fullscreen frame, so that you won't have words cut off at the edges.
For a traditional captioning frame at the bottom of the screen, adjust the Top and Bottom frame margins so the subtitle frame is at the position that you want. This means that the Top frame margin is a higher value (such as 40) than the Bottom frame margin (such as 3). See examples of these settings for more information. - Click Fullscreen (
) to display the Wordly frame in full screen mode. This is the mode required to bring Wordly into your video editing software
- Import Wordly into your video editing software. Depending upon how your software operates, you'll bring the Wordly frame in as a video source (such as a camera) or via a browser.
- View the Wordly frame in the monitor that you plan to use. The frame may appear different, based on your computer's resolution, your monitor's resolution, and your computer's operating system text scaling.
- Adjust the size of the frame and the text size until the Wordly frame displays the way you'd like.
You may have to adjust the frame several times before Wordly displays the way you want on the monitor.
Examples
The following is an example of a full screen display set with a safe area of 5. This would be ideal in situations where the display is full screen. This lets the audience members read the translation. Depending upon how this displays, you might need to adjust the font size to make sure that all attendees can read the text.
In the following lower frame example, the frame margins has been adjusted to Top: 45, Bottom: 5, and a safe area of 2. These margin settings display Wordly text to the lower portion of the screen only. The font has also been increased for greater readability.
This text is then cropped within a video production system, so only the text of the session is displayed. Then it's overlaid onto the video in the video production system.
